We're talking about increasing our Variable Data Printing (VDP) capabilities at work so I'm really interested in Direct Marketing and looking forward to the class. Studies show that there is a better response rate on customized marketing pieces but I don't think it helps when they try something like the piece I got. Yea, it was personalized but it just left me feeling like they were trying to pull one over on me.

You are not alone Kevin! Direct mail aficionados have gotten me once or twice as well. I think you mentioned you are IMC 616: Direct/Interactive Marketing in the fall? If so, you’ll get even deeper into all the tricks marketers try to “pull” on us consumers to try to get us to open up a piece of mail. The one you described sounds magnificent. Recently I’ve received mailing in boxes and odd-shaped envelopes. I can tell you, there is nothing more irresistible than a big box addressed to you – you just have to open it. And sadly, inside was not cute prize or present, but just a flier or some other boring material. But they got me to open it!! Also, I find scratch-offs to be irresistible. Recently I won a KIA from our local dealership because my scratch off number matched the winning code – it got me thinking, but in the end, that flier went straight into the trash. With more junk coming at us all the time, direct marketers certainly have to get more creative to not only get us to open the envelope, but go further and make an inquiry or better yet, a purchase.

Just wait for IMC 616 – you’ll love it (well, after the first few weeks of database analytics, unless you’re into that kind of stuff!)

Kevin,

I have enjoyed reading your blogs. I will have to admit, I didn't think you were old enough to remember Lawrence Welk. Reruns of his shows still play Saturday nights. I know this because my 80-year old father watches and listens to them. He turns the television up so loud I think the house shakes. (And, he never liked my loud music as a kid! Go figure.)

Good luck and keep blogging! -- Ann

Hmmmmm...... I like the idea of the micro magazines. The delivery of such would be instaneous since we seem to have become a "I want it right now" society in many cases. This would also be a "green"alternative, saving our renewable resources (paper-- trees) although there's the flipside to the electricity used to bring the said micro magazine. Cutting costs for materials would increase a company's profit margin as well.

Very cool stuff! Maybe our blogs can turn in to the same type of thing.. although I have to admit that I don't really have the time to make it as detailed and extravagant as I would like! Great work though, and what a great find!
